About me and my art

About Me

I was born in Ireland but since the age of 26, I have traveled extensively and lived in many countries including Sudan, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, Ecuador, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. My travels have inspired and informed my sculpting and this can be seen in my recent works which feature my newly adopted home, Nanaimo, and more generally Vancouver Island, Canada. I produce free-standing sculptures and bas-relief pieces that are representational, but I often include elements of caricature in my works.

About My Art

After making 3D free-standing sculptures for many years, I pivoted to producing 2D bas-relief sculptures. This was mostly for practical reasons including space and storage limitations and shipping logistics.

All of my sculptures are entirely handmade by me from start to finish. The process I use for making my bas-reliefs involves modeling oil-based clay on a wood background to create a positive relief sculpture. I produce a rubber mold of the positive relief and then pour a plaster-based material into the mold. When the plaster sets, I remove it from the mold and apply a pigment.
